YPP, Data Science & Innovation – United States – Remote

We are excited to announce the launch of the second cycle of our Young Professionals Programme (YPP), designed to kickstart your international career. This three-year global program will immerse you in the dynamics of a political and military alliance while fostering your personal and professional growth in a diverse and inclusive environment. Together, we will enable NATO to:
- Tackle existing and emerging global security challenges;
- Facilitate political dialogue among nations;
- Leverage innovation, science, and technology to promote peace and security;
- Stay ahead in critical areas like cyber defense and aerospace;
- Support operations on land, at sea, and in the air worldwide;
- Contribute to global efforts against terrorism, piracy, and human trafficking; and,
- Conduct crisis-management exercises that mobilize thousands and vast resources.

Your Role
During the three years of the program, you will rotate through three different NATO entities:
- Year 1: NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) – The Hague, Netherlands
- Year 2: Allied Command Transformation (ACT) – Norfolk, USA
- Year 3: NATO International Military Staff (IMS) – NATO HQ, Brussels, Belgium
As part of the YPP focused on Data Science & Innovation, you will have the opportunity to apply your expertise and skills in the following ways:
- Develop and promote data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in support of NATO policy and digital transformation.
- Engage in data science projects that enhance decision-making and multi-domain military operations.
- Conduct research and employ analysis techniques, such as modeling, simulation, and wargaming.
- Contribute to joint analyses of operations, training, exercises, and experiments based on defined technical requirements.
- Continuously scout for innovative ideas and adopt technological advancements relevant to the Alliance.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders across NATO, Allies, partners, and the industry to achieve shared objectives.
- Inform strategic decision-makers about the military implications of technological innovations.
- Research emerging trends in Data Science & Innovation.
Who We Are Looking For
NATO seeks candidates who are flexible, eager to learn, and adept at working with diverse stakeholders. For the YPP Data Science & Innovation path, we are primarily interested in candidates with:
- A Master’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or a relevant field applicable to Data Science & Innovation.
Preferred skills and experiences include:
- Academic or professional expertise in Data Science, AI, and Operational Research & Analysis.
- Familiarity with AI and data science technology and policy, especially in security and defense contexts.
- Experience writing policy reports on technology topics, particularly in AI and data.
- Interest in Technology Innovation within international, multi-disciplinary environments.
- Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., Power BI, Matlab, KNIME, Python, VBA), preferably in project contexts.
- Knowledge of Natural Language Processing, machine learning, or computer vision.
- Awareness of NATO’s agenda, policies, military posture, and partnerships.
- Previous experience or internships with international organizations, national administrations, or in the tech industry.
- Additional training or certifications related to Data Science, Innovation, or project management.
- A curious and innovative mindset.
- Strong analytical and drafting skills.
- A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and share knowledge.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
